6 Things to do Outside in London
If we know one thing about the British climate, it’s that it can be pretty unpredictable. Still, when the sun shines across England’s capital on a Summer’s day or the crisp air hits you on a Spring or Winter morning, the temptation to spend your day out in the open is (understandably) pretty strong. And the good news is, you certainly won’t be stuck for things to do in London outside. From cosy film screenings to old-school pitch and putt, we’re confident that there’s something to scratch anyone’s outdoor activity itch.
This is our insider guide to the top 6 things to do outdoors in London, each easily reached from the Clayton Hotel City of London.
Catch a film at the outdoor cinema
30-minute tube ride
While this is primarily a Summer activity, it would be difficult to put together this list and not give a special mention to the range of outdoor cinemas across the city. As mentioned, these tend to happen over the warmer months of the year so if your London visit is a Summer one – make sure to grab a seat (or a deckchair in some cases) and enjoy the show amidst the fresh London air!
For a unique open-air cinema experience, grab tickets to Summer Showtime at the Coaling Jetty which is hosted on the historic Coaling Jetty on the River Thames. If movies on a rooftop with woodfired pizza sounds good, Rooftop Film Club is the one for you! And for those who would rather not splash their cash on movie tickets, check out the free outdoor screenings at Wembley Park’s Summer on Screen.
Take a walking tour around the city
9-15 minute walk from the hotel
Just because you’re looking for things to do outside in London, it doesn’t mean you have to miss out on learning about the history of the city. So if you’re hoping to get up close and personal with some of London’s most intriguing sites and their stories while soaking up the fresh air, one of the many walking tours available might be for you!
As with many things on this list, when it comes to walking tours around the city, the choices are pretty endless. Some highlights include the Sherlock Holmes Tour, Jack the Ripper Tour (a great option for things to do at night in London and just a brief walk from the hotel), the Royal Tour of London and the good old fashioned City Visitor Trail.
Visit some of London’s most renowned parks
25-minute tube ride
It probably goes without saying that London is home to some pretty breathtaking parks and if spending time outdoors is top of your agenda, then you can’t go wrong with a wander around one or more of them. Not sure where to begin? Visit Hyde Park to truly escape the hustle and bustle of the city, Regents Park to surround yourself with wildlife and greenery and Kensington Gardens for a glimpse at Kensington Palace and the Albert Memorial.
If the weather forecast is on your side, why not consider bringing a blanket, snacks and some board games to transform your stroll around the park into an afternoon picnic to remember!
Try out pitch and putt at Alexandra Palace Park
30-minute tube ride
Alexandra Palace has been at the forefront of entertainment in the city for well over 100 years so it’s not surprising that amongst its many events, Alexandra Palace Park offers one of the most fun-filled things to do outdoors in London – pitch and putt! That’s right, amongst the greenery of Alexandra Palace Park you will find the pitch and putt area – recommended for those who are simply looking for a bit of fun!
If pitch and putt doesn’t tickle your fancy, Alexandra Park is bursting with other outdoor activities – from zip lines and fitness classes to rowing boats and a farmers market. This makes for a great day out and can be reached by car or tube from the hotel.
See a classic at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre
25-minute tube ride
We know we’ve already given you the rundown of the most popular outdoor cinemas in the city. But, if live theatre is your preference, then the Open Air Theatre in the heart of Regent’s Park should be top of your list! Known as one of the largest, and arguably most unique, theatres in London, the Open Air Theatre hosts a range of shows including popular musicals like Legally Blonde and performances of classic novels like To Kill a Mockingbird.
Depending on the showing, tickets can sell out quickly, so be sure to check out what’s on while you’re there ahead of time to secure your seat!
Enjoy al fresco dining at one of London’s popular restaurants
20-minute walk from the hotel
The streets of London are jam-packed with unique cafés and restaurants, most of which offer pretty great outdoor seating options. So if you’re idea of a day well spent outdoors includes sharing a bottle of wine over a good meal under an awning, then reserving a seat in one of the popular al fresco dining spots in London for breakfast, lunch or dinner (or all three), is something to consider.
Need some inspiration? We’d recommend Borough Market for those who don’t know what they’re in the mood for but will know it when they see it, Petersham Nurseries Café for those looking to enjoy an afternoon tea in a flower-filled glasshouse and Seabird for those who like the sound of Spanish inspired dishes with views across the city.
